As Mark Twain said during his Grand Tour in 1867, \u201cI travel to learn.\u201d My name is Lilibet, and I welcome you on my European journey to finding the gems and pioneers of natural building techniques across the globe. We look at how local materials, minerals, and the revolutionary plant, Hemp, are used in these natural homes built for healthy lives. Off we go!<\/em><\/p>\n

Welcome to Margent Farms<\/strong>! Living on the edge and off the grid, we\u00a0 travel next to the illustrious hemp farm of the internationally acclaimed\u00a0 film director, Steve Barron.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a night of tossing and turning with excitement, I arrived early\u00a0 afternoon to be greeted by a joyous giggling duo; Steve\u2019s granddaughter\u00a0 and her best friend. These little entrepreneurs were selling homemade\u00a0 elderflower lemonade at the end of the drive and convinced me to pay\u00a0 the premium price for unlimited refills. It was so delicious and\u00a0 refreshing on this hot, windy day, and I could not have been more\u00a0 satisfied.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Steve greeted us with a warm and welcoming smile as he approached the\u00a0 lemonade stand. It was exciting to have a personal tour of his home and\u00a0 farm, all created from the industrial hemp grown on his property. When\u00a0 he said his home was made locally, he meant it! Just think, you can grow\u00a0 your hemp home too!\u00a0<\/p>\n

While leading us through the fields of hemp, like the Pied Piper, Steve\u00a0 educated us about the various seeds they planted. His little\u00a0 granddaughter and her friends frolicked about the tall grasses while\u00a0 Steve regaled us with his story of this leap of faith and how it was one of\u00a0 the most impactful decisions he\u2019s ever made.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When his granddaughter was born, he realized that the damage his\u00a0 generation and the previous ones had done to the world would impact\u00a0 her life and leave her and all the generations to come to clean up the\u00a0 mess. He saw the larger environmental story, the bigger picture, and\u00a0 asked himself, how can I start to detangle this impossibly big knot?\u00a0 Where do I start?\u00a0<\/p>\n

I thought to myself, did Steve want to create an earthly paradise for his\u00a0 family – as Louisa Durrell did for her family in Corfu? He directed \u201cThe\u00a0 Durrells in Corfu,\u201d my favorite film.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We each have a role to play in this tapestry of life. What is yours?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Steve did not have to look far when a friend told him about the\u00a0 regenerative crop, hemp. After hearing about the benefits of this all purpose natural building material, he was hooked on hope and started to\u00a0 plan his next chapter. But first, in his words, \u201cI need to get a farm.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Introducing Margent Farms! <\/strong>(once a cattle yard and shed) Steve found\u00a0 this land, true to its name, on the margins of society. It was already net\u00a0 zero and off-grid with wind turbines, so when he ventured on the hemp\u00a0 road less traveled to convert this cattle-yard into his family\u2019s new\u00a0 healthy hemp home, all he had to do was plant and build!\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more happy with this oasis of positive action that our team\u00a0 has created!\u201d he said as we walked up the path to his home. Steve trusted\u00a0 his instincts to build his home with hemp, and I admire and respect his\u00a0 drive to propel the regenerative architecture movement through the lens\u00a0 of industrial hemp.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He assembled a team of experts to accomplish this task using his film\u00a0 producer skills while collaborating with Cambridge University <\/strong>and\u00a0 H.G. Matthews Brickworks (celebrating its 100th Anniversary in\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

2023). <\/strong>This included architect Paloma Gormley of Practice\u00a0 Architecture <\/strong>and That Hempcrete Guy, Will Stanwix.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

They worked with new processes of combining fibers from the outsides\u00a0 of the hemp plants and bio-resin to create cladding outside the\u00a0 farmhouse. They used internal hemp fibers and other farm waste to\u00a0 create the panels and insulation for the rest of his home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Steve\u2019s Little Farm, they are moving forward and testing different\u00a0 kinds of hemp plants and investing in new ways to use the material. I\u2019m\u00a0 happy to see Steve has invited a variety of hemp seeds to his party!\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t this inspire you to have a low environmental footprint too?\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was so wonderful to converse with Steve and meet his sister, daughter,\u00a0 and grandchildren while I was there. He has done so much with his film\u00a0 career and has continued to go beyond the screen to make an impact that\u00a0 will last for generations. A little birdie told me they are even working on\u00a0 using industrial hemp to make biodegradable wind turbine blades!\u00a0<\/p>\n

We hope that Steve\u2019s bold entrepreneurship and positive actions, starting\u00a0 a cottage industry, spark interest in others to build carbon-negative\u00a0 homes through regenerative architecture and farming. We can all be\u00a0 building with sunshine!\u00a0<\/p>\n
