A Swedish real estate developer said it will build a net-zero carbon logistics center that combines insulation panels filled with hemp fiber and advanced solar energy infrastructure.

The logistics hub will be the largest building in the world using hemp insulation, according to Steve Allin, Director of the International Hemp Building Association (IHBA).

The 80,000 sq.m. facility, to be built by real estate developer NREP in Bålsta north of Stockholm, will support distribution operations by DAGAB, a branch of Axfood AB, to its food stores across Sweden.

The hemp construction materials include 8,000 cu. m of hemp fiber insulation in panels from Ekolution AB, Malmö; 12×15 sq m. panels will go into the 30-meter-high walls and roof of the building, which sits on a 126,000 sq. m industrial site.

“This is a very important development for the hemp building industry requiring approximately 240 tons of hemp fiber or at least 70 hectares of industrial hemp,” said Allin, who first met Remi Loren, Ekolution’s founder, when the latter attended a hemp building course in 2013 in Kristianstad.

“It’s an example of the potential for producers of industrial hemp to provide hemp materials purely to the construction sector, focusing on hurd for hempcrete and fiber for insulation batts,” according to Allin.
